Take one look at the August 2025 FIDE rankings for women’s classical chess. One country stands out right away: China.
They don’t just have one or two stars. They have a whole army of strong players. From the very top to the rest of the top 100, China is leading the way. This isn’t luck. It’s the result of a strong system that keeps producing champions.
China at the Very Top
Here’s the most impressive part: 5 of the top 5 female chess players in the world are Chinese.
- Hou Yifan is number one. She’s a Grandmaster and a legend. Her rating is 2609, and she’s been leading for years.
- Right behind her is the current World Champion, Ju Wenjun, with 2570.
- Then comes Lei Tingjie (2565), who’s also played in world title matches.
- Tan Zhongyi (2539) and Zhu Jiner (2536) complete the Chinese top five.
These five are dominating. In many big tournaments, they end up playing each other in the final rounds. That’s how good they are.
Not Just a Few Stars
China’s power doesn’t stop at the top. If you look deeper into the Top 100, you’ll find more Chinese names. A lot more.
Here are a few:
- Lu Miaoyi – Rank 26, Rating 2439
- Song Yuxin – Rank 33, Rating 2414
- Ding Yixin – Rank 49, Rating 2392
- Shen Yang – Rank 54, Rating 2389
- Zhai Mo – Rank 62, Rating 2380
- Wang Pin – Rank 63, Rating 2378
- Guo Qi – Rank 70, Rating 2371
- Huang Qian – Rank 73, Rating 2367
- Xiao Yiyi – Rank 84, Rating 2354
That’s 14 Chinese players in the top 100. Russia have 12 and India 10. This shows that the country has both elite stars and rising talents. A strong chess culture is growing, and it’s growing fast.
What Makes China So Strong?
China’s success in women’s chess isn’t by chance. Here’s why they keep winning:
- They find talent early. Kids who show promise get serious training fast.
- They have chess academies. These are like sports schools, but for chess. Players study and train full-time.
- They play tough games at home. Their local tournaments are strong. That helps them stay sharp.
- They focus on deep thinking. Chinese players are known for smart, long-term strategies.
- They get support. The government backs chess, helping with training and travel.
This full system helps young players become champions.
Who Can Catch Up?
India is trying. Players like Koneru Humpy, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Divya Deshmukh are doing great. They’re in the top 20 and climbing.
But China still leads. Not just because of one star. Because of a whole team. Because of a system that works.
The August 2025 rankings make one thing clear: In women’s classical chess, China is the boss.
