From August 14–17, 2025, the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlborough, Massachusetts, will once again become the battleground for one of America’s most prestigious chess events: the 55th Annual Continental Open. This Heritage Event isn’t just another tournament on the calendar. It’s a celebration of tradition, skill, and the enduring spirit of competition.
With $30,000 in guaranteed prizes, 150 enhanced US Chess Grand Prix points, and a wide range of sections for players of all strengths, this year promises excitement from start to finish.
A Tournament for Everyone
The Continental Open features seven sections in a 7-round Swiss format, making it a true festival of chess where anyone can find their place.

And for an extra twist, Mixed Doubles Bonus Prizes reward the best male-female team based on combined score, with $1,000 for first place.
Flexible Schedules
Players can choose the pace that works for them:
- 4-day: August 14–17 (Premier to U1500)
- 3-day: August 15–17 (Premier to U1500)
- 2-day: August 16–17 (U1300 and U1100 only)
The different schedules merge into the same prize pool by mid-event, so everyone competes together by the end.
A Look Back – The Champions of 2024
Last year’s Premier Section saw GM Jianchao Zhou and GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez share the top spot with 6.0 points each. Zhou, already a former winner in 2023, proved once again that he’s a force to be reckoned with in Marlborough. FM Danila Poliannikov took third place with 5.5 points, while notable performances came from players like Nathaniel Philip Moor and Jordan Groff.
Given the level of competition, repeating a win here is never easy, but Zhou has already done it twice in a row. The big question for 2025: Can anyone stop him from a three-peat?
Venue & Comfort
The tournament will be held at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel, the same venue as last year, known for its comfortable facilities and free parking. Special rates are available for players ($134 per night, including hot breakfast) if booked by July 30.
Beyond the Main Event
The Continental Open isn’t just about classical chess. On Saturday night, there will be a Blitz Tournament, open to all who register on-site before 9:10 pm. It’s a chance for players to let loose, play at lightning speed, and maybe earn a little extra glory.
Why It Matters
The Continental Open is more than just prize money and ratings. It’s about tradition. For 55 years, it has been a stage where legends are made, underdogs shine, and the chess community comes together. Whether you’re a grandmaster chasing the title, a club player aiming for a section prize, or a young talent getting your first taste of big-stage competition, this event offers something for everyone.
